Many parents ask themselves: “When should I take my child to the orthodontist?”
The answer is simpler than you might think: a first check-up around the age of 7 is recommended.
Why so early?
At this age, children already have their permanent front teeth and their first molars. This allows the orthodontist to assess:
-
the position of the teeth,
-
jaw growth,
-
habits that can affect the smile (thumb sucking, mouth breathing, etc.).
Not necessarily to install a device
A first appointment does not mean that treatment will begin immediately. Often, it is simply a matter of monitoring progress and reassuring parents. However, in some cases, early and gentle intervention can prevent more extensive treatment later on (for example, correcting a jaw that is too narrow).
What are the warning signs?
In addition to age, certain behaviours may warrant an earlier consultation:
-
prolonged sucking of the thumb or pacifier,
-
teeth that are crooked or misaligned,
-
difficulty chewing or breathing through the nose,
-
jaw that appears too small or too protruding.
The role of parents
Taking your child to the orthodontist early gives them the chance to have:
-
a harmonious smile,
-
a balanced jaw,
-
and above all, gentle care appropriate to his age.
